Although 2015 is off to a fast start, we want to take a minute to reflect on some of the amazing things that your support helped us accomplish in 2014.
2014 was an incredibly busy year with an average of over 2,000 kids walking through the doors of the Clubs to participate in fun and engaging programs each day.
A few highlights include:
- Power Hour: Power Hour is a program which dedicates one hour a day to an academically concentrated task. Over the course of the 2013-2014 school year over 3,800 Club members used this time and space to seek homework help and improve their reading skills.
- Promoting Academic and Character Education (PACE): 240 students successfully completed the PACE program during the 2013-2014 school year. Looking at the 151 students for whom data could be analyzed, school office referrals for behavioral issues decreased from an average of 2.34 per student prior to PACE to 1.03 following PACE.
- Outdoor Education Program: With help from the North Face Explore Fund, 719 Club members participated in the Outdoor Education Program which focused on orienteering, compass building, survival skills, knot tying and much more. The program concluded with a trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
- Sports Programs: Over 2,000 Club members participated in our sports, fitness and recreation programs including football, soccer, basketball, baseball and more. On average, 87% of participants played the entire season.
- Gates Summer Camp: This summer Gates Camp filled up to 93% of its capacity creating new experiences for 552 youth over eight weeks.
- Fine Arts Exhibit: In 2014, there were 495 entries in the Southwest Regional Fine Arts Exhibit. Of the 37 pieces that were selected to advance to Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts Exhibit, 14 were from BGCMD. BGCMD also had four National Fine Arts Exhibit winners in 2014.
- Image Makers Photography Program: This year-round program and annual contest encourages Club members to learn and develop photography skills. Seventy four photos were submitted for judging for the City Image Makers Photography contest, 16 of which were selected and advanced to the regional competition. Of the 16 submissions, BGCMD had two regional winners.
- Salah Emergency Fund: With 213 requests for assistance with basic needs, the Salah Fund allowed BGCMD to help more than 500 families gain access to basic needs that they lacked including food, clothing, housing, utilities and transportation. This is a program that we are excited to continue to grow in 2015.
