Celebrating International Day of the Girl

Celebrating International Day of the Girl

Each October, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver proudly celebrates International Day of the Girl. This day is a powerful reminder to honor the strength, resilience, and potential of the young women in our community.

Every day, thousands of girls walk through our Club doors, each with her own story, strengths, and dreams. As we celebrate, we invite you to meet a few of the remarkable young women who embody the spirit of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver: Jalonna-Marie, Oshalaya, Melissa, and Zahira.

Jalonna-Marie G. | Age 16

Denver Broncos Club member

Jolanna-Marie has been attending Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club for three years. Since Jalonna-Marie first stepped into the Club, she has been a leader and continues to impact her community. At the Club, Jolanna is a Keystone club member and runs a cheer club for younger members. She has helped coordinate many events, including Mother & Daughter Valentine's Day, Chili Cook-Off, Trunk or Treat, and March for Peace.

After joining the Club, Jalonna-Marie became a bigger part of her community. Jolanna-Marie and other Club members participated in a youth advocacy event in Washington, D.C. The Club has also offered her opportunities to continue to advocate for her beliefs closer to home at visits with Senator John Hickenlooper and Dr. Condoleezza Rice.

Jalonna-Marie found her voice at the Club and is inspired to help younger girls find their voice, believe in themselves, and dream big.

“The Club's impact on me is so strong that I have dedicated all my free time to being there for the people I care about.”
Oshalaya D. | Age 15
Churchill Owen Club member

Oshalaya’s journey with J. Churchill Owen Boys & Girls Club began when she was six years old. Walking to the Club every day, she found a place that offered her endless opportunities, joy, and support. At the age of 10, she joined Torch Club, where she began to develop her leadership skills, learning the value of putting others first and recognizing how leaders can positively impact lives.

Through programs like Torch Club and Keystone, Oshalaya gained confidence in sharing her ideas and exploring educational opportunities. Her leadership expanded as she traveled to a leadership conference in Texas and became an Academic Peer Leader. These experiences taught her valuable life skills and helped her grow personally and professionally.

Sports have also been a significant part of Oshalaya’s experience. Playing her first game at the Club motivated her to continue competing, and she now plays varsity volleyball at school, crediting the Club for giving her the confidence and preparation to excel.

Oshalaya furthered her leadership journey by participating in the Youth of the Year program. The challenges and experiences as a candidate gave her perseverance, self-confidence, and the ability to advocate for herself and her community. Surrounded by other inspiring leaders, she continues to grow, with a strong desire to make a lasting impact.

“I believe that we all can play an important part in making our community better.”
Melissa G. | Age 11

Boston Club member

Melissa’s experience at Boston Boys & Girls Club has been filled with opportunities for growth, fun, and support. She finds joy in playing soccer and participating in competitions, which motivate her to improve her skills. In addition to sports, Melissa loves the cooking activities at the Club, especially baking with her sister, where they make treats like cake pops and Tres Leches cake.

The Club has taught Melissa many valuable lessons, but teamwork stands out as the most important. Whether in the gym or working on projects and arts and crafts, staff members always ensure fair and balanced teams, fostering a sense of inclusivity and collaboration.

Field trips are another highlight for Melissa. She recalls a memorable trip to a haunted house where the staff stayed by her side, helping her overcome her fears. The trust she has in the staff and the safe environment they provide inspire her to one day work at a Boys & Girls Club, where she hopes to make other kids feel just as welcome and cared for.

“I am very grateful for the staff we have because they always keep a smile on my face and make me feel safe.”
Zahira A | Age 11

Shopneck Club member

Zahira’s time at Shopneck Boys & Girls Club has been shaped by her passion for helping others and her love for learning. She takes pride in her ability to support people, finding joy in making others feel happy and included. Zahira’s friends often tell her she’s good at making people laugh, a trait she embraces as she listens to and encourages those around her.

At the Club, Zahira explored a variety of activities, from learning new games in the gym to creating art through painting and coloring. She values the lessons in fairness, respect, and teamwork, always eager to help others when they need it. Whether working on homework or engaging in fun, creative activities with friends, she appreciates the support and space the Club provides.

“I have had the incredible opportunity to learn so many valuable things at the Club that have helped shape me into the person I am today.”

These inspiring young women are just a few examples of the diverse and talented members who motivate us every day. By sharing their stories and celebrating their accomplishments, we honor the extraordinary contributions of girls who are shaping a brighter future for all of us.
