Hannah: Making Her Seat at the Table

Hannah: Making Her Seat at the Table

By: Erin Porteous

In the bustling halls of high school, amidst the academic challenges and teenage tumult, there's a young leader who is carving her own path to greatness. Meet Hannah, a 17-year-old senior, and a shining star at Arthur E. Johnson Boys & Girls Club. Her journey from a wide-eyed six-year-old to a junior staff member and role model is a testament to the transformative power of the Club and the unwavering spirit of young individuals like her.

Growing Up in the Club

Hannah's story is intricately woven into the fabric of the Boys & Girls Club. She embarked on her Club journey at the age of six, following in the footsteps of her older siblings. Little did she know that this decision would shape her into the inspiring, bright figure she is today. Over the years, Hannah was blessed with mentors and role models who helped mold her into the impactful young woman she's become.

From Student to Teacher: Hannah's Role as Junior Staff

Today, Hannah serves as a junior staff member at Arthur E. Johnson Boys & Girls Club, where her journey has come full circle. Her role allows her to impart the wisdom she's gained throughout her years at the Club to younger members. Through her work, Hannah strives to inspire and guide the next generation, just as she was once inspired and guided herself.

Becoming a Role Model

As a young woman of color, Hannah recognizes the importance of female role models. She has become just that for many Club members who are younger than her. Her willingness to lend an ear, offer support, and be a constant presence in their lives has left an indelible mark. Whether through coaching the middle school girls' soccer team or doing arts and crafts with Club kids, Hannah uses every opportunity to shine a light on younger members' lives. She firmly believes that every child should have someone to look up to, and she is committed to being that person.

Empowering Future Leaders

Hannah has a clear message for aspiring young leaders: "We need to make our spot at the table and not let it go.” She knows the value of having a voice and using it to effect change. Recently, through the Club, she had the opportunity to meet with Senator Hickenlooper and advocate for what she believes in, debunking the notion that women don't have a seat at the table. Hannah aims to ensure that the seat she's claimed is available for the young girls who will follow her.

Pursuing Her Passion

Through her involvement with the Club, Hannah discovered her passion for social work. It was the guidance and support from Club staff that helped her identify this calling. She dreams of making a difference in the lives of children, just as the Club has made a profound difference in hers.

Hannah's journey is a shining example of how, with determination, support, and unwavering belief in oneself, any girl can find their place in the world and make a lasting impact. She reminds us all that the future is bright when young leaders like her lead the way.
