Oshalaya D. | Age 15
Churchill Owen Club member
Oshalaya’s journey with J. Churchill Owen Boys & Girls Club began when she was six years old. Walking to the Club every day, she found a place that offered her endless opportunities, joy, and support. At the age of 10, she joined Torch Club, where she began to develop her leadership skills, learning the value of putting others first and recognizing how leaders can positively impact lives.
Through programs like Torch Club and Keystone, Oshalaya gained confidence in sharing her ideas and exploring educational opportunities. Her leadership expanded as she traveled to a leadership conference in Texas and became an Academic Peer Leader. These experiences taught her valuable life skills and helped her grow personally and professionally.
Sports have also been a significant part of Oshalaya’s experience. Playing her first game at the Club motivated her to continue competing, and she now plays varsity volleyball at school, crediting the Club for giving her the confidence and preparation to excel.
Oshalaya furthered her leadership journey by participating in the Youth of the Year program. The challenges and experiences as a candidate gave her perseverance, self-confidence, and the ability to advocate for herself and her community. Surrounded by other inspiring leaders, she continues to grow, with a strong desire to make a lasting impact.
"Creo que todos podemos desempeñar un papel importante para mejorar nuestra comunidad".
Melissa G. | Age 11

Melissa’s experience at Boston Boys & Girls Club has been filled with opportunities for growth, fun, and support. She finds joy in playing soccer and participating in competitions, which motivate her to improve her skills. In addition to sports, Melissa loves the cooking activities at the Club, especially baking with her sister, where they make treats like cake pops and Tres Leches cake.
The Club has taught Melissa many valuable lessons, but teamwork stands out as the most important. Whether in the gym or working on projects and arts and crafts, staff members always ensure fair and balanced teams, fostering a sense of inclusivity and collaboration.
Field trips are another highlight for Melissa. She recalls a memorable trip to a haunted house where the staff stayed by her side, helping her overcome her fears. The trust she has in the staff and the safe environment they provide inspire her to one day work at a Boys & Girls Club, where she hopes to make other kids feel just as welcome and cared for.
