March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a global observance dedicated to honoring women's accomplishments, raising awareness of gender discrimination, and advocating for gender equality. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, we are proud to have dedicated and inspiring women on our team who empower our Club members daily.
As we celebrate this special day, we are thrilled to recognize the contributions of the women at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver who are making a lasting impact in our Clubs and communities. By honoring their successes and reflecting on their wisdom, we hope to inspire the next generation of young women to dream big, lead with confidence, and shape a brighter future.

What is a significant achievement you're proud of as a woman?
When I first started in the field of non-profit fundraising, it was predominantly men who held leadership roles. Women held positions that supported the frontline fundraisers, the people who went out and made the big ask of donors, but they did not typically make the ask. I am very proud of my accomplishments in becoming a female fundraising leader and securing multi-million-dollar commitments from donors.
What piece of wisdom or guidance would you share with younger women?
Do not be afraid of the unknown. If something is of interest to you, learn more about it even if there is no one at the table who you can currently relate to or see yourself in. Learn more and become the face that other women can look to in the future.
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why?
My mother has been one of the greatest influences in my life. She grew up during a time when women could not even have a credit card in their name. She did not let that stop her from becoming a successful businesswoman and a leader in the city where I grew up. She also fought hard for girls' sports to have the same competitive opportunities as boys in my community. Even though her opinions were often not popular at first, she never let that sway her. I admire her for her determination and commitment to always make strides forward.
Is there a quote that has inspired you or that you live by each day?
“Be humble. Be Kind. Be fearless.”

What is a significant achievement you're proud of as a woman?
As a woman, specifically a woman of color, I'm proud that I have consistently challenged norms and defied expectations in many industries. My presence has been felt, and my absence has certainly been known throughout my career. However, my success has served as a reminder that expertise and leadership are not defined by gender and race but by ability, authenticity, and determination.
What piece of wisdom or guidance would you share with younger women?
When something is right for you, it will give you energy. That's how you know.
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why?
I am greatly inspired by my mother's strength and love for her family and community. Throughout her life, she served in whatever capacity was needed, ensuring the stability for everyone from family members to folks in the community. She was a financer, political activist, educator, protector, and friend.

"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you." - Maya Angelou

I am incredibly proud to be a mom and to show my kids that it's possible to work hard, balance motherhood, and still live a fulfilling life. It's a great achievement for me to demonstrate that dedication and perseverance can lead to success in all areas of life.

- Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and never settle for less than you deserve
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why?
My grandmother was a constant source of inspiration in my life. Her strength, wisdom, and kindness have shaped who I am today. She taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to myself. One thing she told me during a difficult time was that I was the one person who could turn scars into stars. Her life and how she lived it inspires me every day.
Is there a quote that has inspired you or that you live by each day?
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” - Gandhi
To me, this doesn't always mean making huge changes, but rather using your voice, showing kindness to strangers, staying optimistic, and taking small actions that can make a big difference.
Rushonia “Shauna” Blanche, Club Director at Jack A. Vickers Boys & Girls Club

Coming from the line of women in my family, I am proud to stand independently on my own two feet. Thanks to this independent chip on my shoulder, I fight to reach my goals in life! I continue to push my own boundaries and strive for growth.
What piece of wisdom or guidance would you share with younger women?
Don't just do it for yourself. Know why you need to do it for yourself. Never forget the why. Your why will be your greatest motivator, and your why can change for your need.
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why?
My mother is my greatest inspiration. She is the first women to show me how to fight for yourself, seek growth, and serve others in life. My mother is my greatest inspiration!
Is there a quote that has inspired you or that you live by each day?
"If it ain't broke... Don't fix it!”
This saying is often shared, and when I hear others saying it, I like to engage with them in conversation and ideas of growth. I take this opportunity to remind others that it is okay to want to improve something, instead of allowing it to remain the same out of convenience.

What is a significant achievement you're proud of as a woman?
Two major achievements make me proud as a woman. I was in the military for six years and honorably discharged as a Sergeant. It's a field where very few women go. I was a mechanic, and I worked on all the heavy-wheeled vehicles. I also own a business, and if it wasn't for this endeavor, I'd still be in the military. I had to make the tough decision to leave to pursue other dreams.
What piece of wisdom or guidance would you share with younger women?
My biggest piece of wisdom is to learn and seek growth constantly! I am always reading another book to help me learn or give me a new perspective on life. Always ask questions! It's the number one way to grow.
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why?
My business partners and mentors are my biggest inspirations. They live life to the fullest and chase their dreams every day. They continue to teach me successful life principles and how to be a woman!
